Our boat is very small, can we
still help?
- Of course! It is the size of your heart, not the
boat that matters. While Islanders appreciate supplies such as
books and toothbrushes, your most meaningful gift is simply your
time.

What should we take as gifts when we go cruising?
- Handing out gifts every where you go can create
real problems for others. Many cruisers quickly tire of children
harassing them for "lollies" (candy) as soon as they step ashore, or
worse yet, when the children paddle out in their raft and keep
banging against the freshly waxed hull!
Islanders are not beggars, they are simply responding to the way we
treat them. While it would be proper to give a gift to your hosts,
such as a photograph or cake (some islanders don't have ovens),
don't try and give something to everyone. Try and find something
that can be shared, like a Frisbee or ball for the children; they
would probably love for you to play with them!. Pencils and school
supplies are best given directly to the school (you could even
volunteer to help in the classroom for an afternoon!).

What about giving alcohol?
- Hmmmm, that may be a nice thought, but it can
cause problems in the home, plus you could become known as the local
liquor store. Coca-Cola is almost universally appreciated, and
doesn't carry the negative consequences liquor can. Of course it's
up to you, but most cruisers we know only give sodapop.

Pollen Path
- One "gift", excellent for schools or individuals, is
an inflatable globe. Inexpensive and a good communication tool, we've
given dozens. Other frequently requested items are sewing needles and
thread, fishing hooks and line, fabric, rope or line, and cooking gear.
We have never given the kids lollies but instead, have a large supply of
balloons, stickers and pins from Canada. The best gift is that of your
friendship, your time and any skills.

I don't have
any qualifications, what can I do?
- Have no fear! We really mean it when we say your
greatest gift is simply your time. Most islanders would love for you
to join them in their daily tasks, though be prepared to build up a
relationship with them first! You could learn how to use an
underground oven, read a story to a class, the sky is the limit.
